About TAHPP
Why This Program Was Created
As a pediatrician and the mother of a transgender child, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges that Black LGBTQIA+ individuals face within the healthcare system. My own journey has shaped my understanding of how bias, ignorance, and lack of affirmation can harm our patients, particularly when it comes to accessing care that acknowledges their full identity.
When my child faced barriers to receiving the compassionate, gender-affirming care they deserved, I realized that the healthcare system was failing too many marginalized people, especially Black LGBTQIA+ individuals. From the language used by providers to the systemic biases in treatment, the inequities were glaring—and dangerous.
That’s when I knew I had to take action.
The TAHPP program was born from my own experience, my mission to make sure no patient ever feels unseen or unsafe in a healthcare setting, and my commitment to equipping healthcare professionals with the tools they need to offer affirming, compassionate care. This program was created to train, inspire, and empower providers to become the allies their LGBTQIA+ patients need, and to create a healthcare space that celebrates and affirms all identities, particularly those that are often overlooked.
